The underwater world comes to life in vivid fluorescent colours in this mesmerising, beautiful, exquisitely puppeteered show.
Patrick McDonald. The Adelaide Advertiser 5 stars

“One of the best examples of visual theatre I’ve seen. Excellent! Accessible yet enthralling for all. Richard is a most generous performer. His after show expose was as fascinating as the performance.
Tim Bell, Point Lonsdale Primary. VIC.

In Dreamer in the Deep, the third adventure in the Dreamer series, Dreamer dons a wet suit and flippers and descends into the depths of the ocean.

There, a leafy sea dragon (a creature found only in the waters around south east Australia) asks for help to find its mate who has been kidnapped by a greedy lionfish.

With a sea horse as a guide and travelling companion, Dreamer travels to the seaweed forests in the temperate seas, to the bottom of the ocean in a submarine and to the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef. They meet many beautiful, exotic and dangerous sea creatures along the way and make a narrow escape from a curious and hungry anglerfish.

In Dreamer in the Deep we observe sea life in all its diversity and wonder. We even meet an accordion playing crab and his aspiring opera singer cleaning shrimp!

Style of Puppetry:
The style of puppetry is black light combined with other lighting and experimental colour
effects, scrims, and manipulation of scale creating a detailed and vivid three dimensional
world.
There is no spoken dialogue. The story is told visually with the support of original soundtracks
created especially for the Dreamer productions by Melbourne composer, John Grant. The
performances use black light and rod puppets within an enclosed booth. Although the
puppeteers are completely invisible, the puppets and props glow under the blacklight,
resulting in a magical and convincing illusion.

Teachers' notes with follow up activities and puppet designs are available upon booking.

More Reviews

This magical visual journey was well received:evident by the rapturous appreciation of parents and children alike as they discovered new sea creatures, clearly naming each one, and watched the food cycle as small fish were chased/eaten by big ones.
