If you're on this website, you probably already think the arts are important in education. Let's focus on music. Read this article about how learning music at a very young age can improve language skills. At the other end of the spectrum, read about how learning to play a musical instrument in old age has a huge range of benefits.

Apart from physical and mental improvements from the act of learning and playing, I think it's also worth mentioning the creative/spiritual side of music - that it can transport, connect and transcend.
