An Animal Life

Presented by Comic Poetry with Avatars
 An Animal Life

An Animal Life is a collection of comic poetry performed on video by shockingly ‘human’ avatars who variously recite Hugh Brown's animal poetry. The show highlights the inter-dependencies and intricacies of modern animal life - our own included.

An Animal Life has relevance to varied school subject areas. It enhances an understanding and appreciation of writing and poetry, while also stimulating and enhancing cross curriculum explorations, acting as a novel basis and stimulus for class instruction and activities. The format of using animals and insects to discuss human life, via the artificial life of very human avatars, creates novelty and intrigue for the class. Moreover, it engages the class in an area of interest for the young (as well as the old), Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Some ways in which various School disciplines may find An Animal Life of relevance and value:

  • Media studies can consider the role and future of AI in communications: the benefits, limits and opportunities.
  • Humanities and Social Studies classes (HASS) can be stimulated to explore the role of AI (and its interface with imagination and invention) in our rapidly changing world.
  • Drama and Arts studies can also consider the role and application of avatars and AI in creativity - as we seek to understand and explain us to ourselves.
  • Science may also be able to explore the way science is interfacing with the virtual human, supplanting us or enhancing us.
  • History classes may reflect on how the past, truth, knowledge and future may be altered, or even reconfigured, by avatars and AI.
  • English studies can be further stimulated to consider whether and how AI and avatars can enhance or diminish our language, literacy and interactions as communicators.

An Animal Life also includes the occasional appearance of the virtual author Hugh Brown, to provide a contrasting, alternative voice to the avatars (speaking the humans' mind).
