Shaun Parker & Company

“All of the teachers were buzzing about the performance. They were so impressed with the talent and skill! I particularly loved the way you interacted with our children ensuring that they got the anti-bullying message.”
Principal, Galilee Primary

"A wonderful short and relevant piece to study with juniors for appreciation and to inspire narrative-based composition for all stages. THE YARD picks up and navigates so many key social issues expertly, for students of all ages."
Amanda Barwick, Scots College

The Yard  is an award-winning anti-bullying program created by to help schools to deal with and explore themes of bullying, social exclusion, peer pressure, and resilience through dance and music.   It’s hard-hitting contemporary dance and street styles fused with an arresting electro-acoustic score.

The Yard was originally devised in collaboration between Shaun Parker and teenage performers from the Captivate program in Western Sydney, who continue to perform in the work. Winner of the Australian Dance Award for Youth & Community Dance, The Yard reaches thousands of students each year.

After touring The Yard to Bonnyrigg Heights PS, Assistant Principal Kylea Dowling said it was “one of the best performances we’ve had at the school”.   After the show, Vanessa, of Year 6, offered her thoughts on the show's message: "To stop bullying and never leave anyone out." Fairfield City Champion News

The Yard program is being presented in Term 1 2021 in the lead-up to the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.

The Yard creates a theatrical world about life in Australian schools. Unique, gutsy and ground-breaking, five dancers take the students on a visual experience dealing with the social issues pulsating within the schoolyard. The workshop following the performance unpacks these themes, ultimately finding unity in the diversities of culture, gender and ethnicity that exist in our schools and society. Our objective is to not only empower children to deal with the issues addressed in the performance, but to also inspire and motivate them in their future careers and life choices.

The original main-stage production of The Yard was created with teenagers who came from migrant and refugee families based in Western Sydney. Five of these original dancers work with us today to deliver this in-school program.

“THE YARD was amazing. My kids were so engrossed. They couldn't stop talking about it and for a group of such disengaged students that's incredible. The best bit was, they could have been my kids on stage, such a diverse group." - Blaxcell Public School
